ANOTHER WORLD ARCHIVES

SHOW ARCHIVES

Of the show's 8891 episodes, only about half still exist. The studio regularly taped over episodes to save on the costs of videotape, and the official archives begin only around October 1, 1979. We estimate this from the use of fall 1979 footage found in 1984's official 20th anniversary montage, the earliest being David Bailey's return on October 11, 1979 in the role of Russ Matthews.

The AWHP established the AWVL to funnel its own collections, acquired over the years from various sources from reclusive collectors to television producers who were able to acquire direct master copies from the actual P&G archives.

We were also once informed that the years 1979-1985 have several episodes missing and there are possibly large gaps in the collection, meaning a complete run starts from 1986 at earliest. Earlier material from 1964-1978 is available at the Paley Centre in New York City through the use of viewing booths.

Episodes from 1971-1974 are archived at the UCLA Film & Television Archive but are non-circulating SRLF archival copies. Unfortunately, these episodes are on 1/2" open reel tape, which is very labor intensive to transfer to a viewable format; therefore these reels have been closed for research due to lack of funding. For UCLA to make any attempt to transfer the reels, it was necessary first to be granted permission from the copyright holder. The AWHP attempted to jumpstart this process in 2021, but were told "P&G basically disbanded the department that used to manage the soaps and other productions, so they aren't able to grant any permissions related to the old shows."

Between 2003 and 2010, P&G and its spin-off company Telenext Media distributed episodes via on-line services and TV cable stations.

From July 2003 to April 2007, SOAPnet, an ABC channel, rebroadcast 975 episodes. The episodes in question originally aired on NBC from July 1, 1987 to May 10, 1991.

From 2006 to January 2009, 323 episodes were made available through America Online's AOL Video service, downloadable free of charge. The episodes in question originally aired on NBC from August 1, 1980 to November 19, 1981.

From July 29, 2008 to October 21, 2010, the video streaming website Hulu released 360 episodes online. As of December 2009, the same episodes seen through Hulu were also available on Telenext Media's official YouTube channel. The episodes in question originally aired on NBC from May 10, 1991 (the last one that SOAPnet had aired) to October 5, 1992.

Since the 1990s (and even earlier, through tape trades conducted through soap opera newsletters), many Another World episodes have been available to fans.

From the 1990s to the 2000s, the AWVL distributed VHS copies. In the 2000s, the episodes were digitized to VCD MPEG-1 and distributed on DVD. Since the 2010s, all new material acquired is digitized and uploaded to the AWHP's YouTube channel.

In 2024 we began compiling a Master List to catalog the existence and whereabouts of all surviving Another World episodes. The Master List can be found here

Notes: Scripts are missing for the following episodes: August 2 - October 29, 1965; February 8 - March 16, 1973; and October 26, 1973 - January 10, 1974. While incomplete, this collection remains the most complete and comprehensive available for research and enjoyment purposes. The AWHP has determined that some episode dates (compared to the university's catalog) have been proven to be incorrect due to known pre-emptions and perceived gaps within the collection.

We have contacted the Head Archivist at Bowling Green inquiring about the gaps in the collection. Similarly to August 2 - October 29, 1965, we are hopeful that the missing scripts are in other archive formats, separate collections, or will be archived some time in the future.
